Coach Andy
Coach Andy sets the standard every single day. He expects his athletes to show up like it’s tryouts, because winning isn’t just a result, it’s a mindset. Whether it’s on the mat, in the classroom, or in everyday life, excellence is a habit.
Andy grew up in Michigan as a competitive swimmer before joining the United States Navy after high school. He spent 21 years serving as a Navy Diver, retiring in 2022. Today, he continues to serve working as a civilian at the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center located in as a Hyperbaric Technician, bringing precision, discipline, and high standards into everything he does.
That same pride carries into his family. Andy is incredibly proud of his son, Brock, who chose to pave his own path by serving in the United States Navy. Watching Brock step into that role has been one of Andy’s greatest sources of pride. He is also extremely proud of his daughter, Bre, and her journey in cheer. As a strong and reliable back spot, Bre embodies the work ethic, toughness, and heart that define the Hurricanes. Andy is excited to watch her continue to grow in the sport and looks forward to seeing the impact she will one day have on the program.
Before cheer entered the picture, Andy coached baseball and football in both Virginia and Florida. Transitioning into a predominantly female sport opened his eyes in a whole new way, and if you’ve been around long enough, you’ve probably heard him say more than once, “These ladies are ruthless!”
Andy and Errica have been married for over 20 years, and during that time, he’s heard everything there is to hear about cheer, from practices to competitions to late-night routines run in the living room. He was also a dedicated fan of every team Errica coached over the years. So when Errica decided to start her own competition program, it only made sense that Andy would jump in and help however he could.
Andy officially began his cheer coaching journey around age 37—a little later than most. Not even knowing how to count to eight, he stepped into the role of team trainer, focusing on the health, safety, and well-being of Hurricanes athletes. To this day, everyone knows to yell “Coach Andy!” when an athlete needs help.
His military background quickly became an asset in conditioning and strength training, and over time, he’s learned the ins and outs of cheer coaching, yes, including counting to eight.
Andy thrives on competition, and his favorite saying sums it up best: “I like to have fun, and winning is fun.” His favorite moment in any routine is when the athletes hit and roll straight into the dance. That’s the moment when all the hard work pays off.
This is leadership.
This is family.
This is building a legacy.
